What is medical rehabilitation?

Medical rehabilitation: Improving quality of life

Medical rehabilitation is an independent clinical medical specialty, responsible for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation management of people with disabling conditions and comorbidities of all ages, in order to promote their physical and cognitive abilities and performance, and to improve their quality of life.

Unlike other branches of medicine, the main objective of medical rehabilitation is not to diagnose or treat certain conditions, but to help patients overcome the limits imposed by their disabilities.

The aim is to improve and restore functional capacity and quality of life for people with physical disabilities, disabling conditions and/or handicap, the goal being to restore optimal function in the context of various physical, tissue and/or functional impairments.

What does palliative care represent?

Palliative care: support and comfort during the struggle

Palliative care represents a „helping hand”, even if it does not „cure” nor prevent the onset of incurable diseases; it is applied in close connection with each medical specialty in which chronic incurable diseases are found, from the onset of the disease, and can contribute to prolonging life.

Palliative care involves the relief of any symptoms that might cause discomfort to the patient. Thus, this type of care relieves pain, breathing difficulties, cough, nausea, constipation, bloating and diarrhea. It is oriented towards improving hygiene, including oral hygiene. Its aim is to relieve nutritional problems such as anorexia and cachexia, fatigue and, of course, to improve the psychological state.

When it comes to loved ones, it is very difficult to decide whether or not to turn to a private palliative medicine hospital. Often, patients with progressive chronic diseases need special care, not only physical but also psychological and spiritual. Home care can become extremely difficult for the patient's relatives. In this case, a good palliative hospital is the optimal solution.

The principles of palliative care are the following:

Palliative care improves quality of life and positively influences the course of the disease

Palliative care ensures the control of pain and other symptoms;

Palliative care considers the patient and their family as a unit of care

Palliative care affirms the value of life and regards death as a natural process

Palliative care neither hastens nor postpones death

Palliative care integrates the psycho-social and spiritual aspects into the holistic care of the patient

Palliative care ensures that the complex needs of the patient are met through the intervention of the interdisciplinary team

Palliative care includes those investigations that are necessary for a better understanding and appropriate treatment of the clinical complications of the disease

Palliative care provides support to the family/carers in caring for the patient and also after their death, during the period of mourning
